Yep. It's also possible to complete it without being attached to Fisty at all, but thats a bit weird. I made a challenges thread full of random stuff like that somewhere...

Heh, this is easy:
-First person to beat Big Winner Uncle Dave, becoming 1st of the world (but only for a while, until I crashed my tower. Haven't gotten around to making a new one yet)
-Proud owner of 3 unbeaten records (Fisty, Tower, Bridge)
-Person with the highest amount of goos left-over (Excluding Uncle Dave, but he's not an actual player)

As for speed records, I might have a lot of them if the speed record thing actually worked... it only shows the first time you ever made on that level.

I have the fastest time on Flying Machine, and have had it since probably the first or second week.

I also used to have the fastest time of the most balls collected(If that makes any sense). I think it was on Chain. A whole bunch of people have gotten 25 balls on it, but I had the fastest time. Maybe I still do. The rank should really be based on more than one thing, like overall, the most balls wins and most balls fastest beats most balls slowest and so on. But I might just be biased and just be wanting to see my name on more than one list.

Actually, I agree. The more highscores the better :)
But before they do that, they should make it so you can change your fastest time. Right now, the time it shows, is the time you got when you first completed the level. And it doesn't change if your time deccreases.

I'd like more bragging rights, please. I've increased my score on Ode to the Bridgebuilder from 42 to 43. Also, I made a video for your strategy-copying pleasure. Only problem is, my server is kind of frozen atm, and I'm not there to reboot it. Anyone know a good site to host the video? ~11 MB, 6 MB if you want the H264 version.

You could just use Youtube perhaps? Unless you are intentionally avoiding that option.

Youtube's quality sucks... and it being just 10 MB I figured another option might be available.

Marius, I figured it out - the game doesnt always successfully connect to the internet to upload scores. Once you get your 43, go into WoGC and look at the board - it'll probably say 'connecting' and then something like 'could not connect - is the internet available?'. THEN click connect, it'll work properly, and your score should be uploaded.

FYI yes this IS a bug report Kyle + Ron-san!

The design is similar. No holes in the base though.

I'm kind of inclined to go in there with fraps running, but it will collapse*, and I don't really have the time at this very moment to rebuild it.

Our building styles are almost exactly the same Marius!, No wonder we were rulers of the board for so long, that design clearly rocks.

Oh sweet :D I didn't notice (I have the fora bookmarked). Very nice :)
The only thing that bugs me about the building style is that I have to switch from having triangles with horizontal beams to triangles with vertical beams, and also that the triangles with vertical beams are hard to reduce in width. Both of these things can't be done while retaining symmetry, which bugs me :P

Btw, do you also use the same strategy as I do for the regular levels? With the undo fly things? (Can be seen here)
It's probably still possible to beat me on Tower of Goo and on Fisty's bog (But not on any other level, if I'm not mistaken :P)

I dont make much use of the flies to be honest unless I really mess up, but the thing that gets me about making towers is that while trying to create hexagons the goos often stretch across the gap and make lots of pentagons, which lowers the strength immensely. I'm sure you can see what I mean by hexagons.

Oh, and luvin the highscores. Not that the game is about winning, you understand. In fact the Game, if i remember correctly, is about losing; and I just lost the Game.

Yup, I know the problem. But I don't usually make hexagons like that. For the goo corp tower, I make large grids of triangles layer by layer so I don't run into that problem, and for most other levels, you just build a thin tower anyway.

And yeah, highscores are awesome. I'm a sucker for highscores and achievements :P It helps that I get good at games fairly quickly :)

I'd like to add a new bragging right. I made 28 goos on the new level of the beta2, of which I'm not sure I'm allowed to post pictures of. Even though this level is not on the leaderboard, I believe 28 is one of the highest scores possible. I took a pic of the final structure. Would I be allowed to post it?

My score is done with a technique I haven't used before. Maybe it's the same as yours, maybe it isn't. We'll see :)

Arg, I had exactly 27 gooes and the pipe (+1 more after i dismantled the pipe connection), and there was a final goo ball floating in the water below.  In my rush to reach 29, i rammed the goo ball into the spikes and killed it.  :(


EDIT: I just realized... there are only 28 gooes on all of the first level of stage 2.  My 29th goo ball must have been due to the glitch I reported a few hours ago.

I counted, and my 28 are done without any glitches. So yeah, my score still stands on 28.

I think I just guessed it - use the spikes to split up the fixed goos into a pair and the rest all single goos, saved by being attached to a balloon. Remove balloons from single goos to make them fall onto the pair and then subsequently get sucked into the pipe...i just sort of half managed it after about 20 mins of trying, but bloody hell marius you're setting yourself a target there!!

[ripping out chunks of hair] ARRGH! I just managed AT LAST to split up the pentagon correctly, got the extra goo in, only to STUPIDLY drop a water goo in the wrong place so that instead of landing on the chain being sucked into the pipe, it fell straight past it to its demise...WHY!?!?!  >:(

While I go and scream into a pillow, can you enlighten me on your Drool tactic? I thought maybe you might be swinging a very small water chain into the spikes to seperate off a clump and awaken the ivy goos, then build down to the pipe, but so far I haven't been able to do this - am I clutching at straws here?

Hey, that's actually a nice idea. I hadn't thought of that. I guess it's hard to separate a bit when you only have water goo though.
No, my strategy is different. Try the strategy we use in Fly away little ones :)

Your not missing much.  We only saw two levels of the second chapter and a little bit of the new UI.  I've spent more time looking for and confirming bugs than I have actually playing.

Same, although I do wonder what happened to the goo bucket idea for WoGCo. Unless of course thats the purpose behind the green screen of doom...

I try to be obscure on purpose so's not to give away any seekrits. Those on the beta should know what I mean.

Oh, and Marius, I managed to get three green goos up to the top on drool without using a single water goo. That would have enabled me to beat the 29 record but for the fact that in doing so I accidentally killed about 5 green goos... Oh well, I try again.

Yes, we still need an indestructable goo bucket made out of a square of gooes and 2 baloons that always hovers at your screen height...  It would make WoG soo much easier.

Glad to see I'm not the only one using that method! I can usually juggle about 3 times at best before I skim the side of the Goo and send it flying into The Wall Of Certain Death.

You only need to juggle 2 green balls up. (You'll figure it out)

I know 36 balls is the optimum... it's just really difficult to get with 0 moves, which would be the absolute optimum :) Kudos for getting it first though :)

I can't see how you expect to finish that map without bugusing, been trying for hours to find out, and i found perhaps a hole with the physics *cough* bugabuse *cough* but even then i can't use it to finish it in 0 moves.

Oh but the 0 moves thing isn't physics abuse though, only the 36 balls thing is. The 0 moves thing is noticing some peculiarity in the which things catch fire and which don't, and then using that. I'm 100% certain that this peculiarity isn't a bug, but a design decision.

I still had 6 moves even though i figured out the trick.

Had to use like 20 balls to actually replicate it, it seems to be pretty hit and miss this "trick".

Ok, I figured out the trick for Burning Man (how to do it in very few moves). Not sure how to get all the other balls yet though... working on it!

Nope. I think if you break the square you can get 54, and without doing that you can get 53.

How on earth do you get 0 moves in Burning Man, I can get two, but the moving the square is the sticking point for me. Goo missiles don't seem to affect it much :/.

It does involve a bit of luck, but also a decent amount of skill and planning. But you'll probably figure it out :)

I've been obsessing over Second Hand Smoke, as well. It should theoretically be possible to get 33 out of 34 balls here, but it would require insane amounts of luck ;D Best I got so far is 28, which is annoying, cause I dropped a couple of them that time :P

Ohmy... it's that level. Haven't optimized that yet either...
I've looked at it, and I don't think 33 is possible. at the top, there is no center match-stick-goo. This means one of the sides will always burn faster, which means your albinos will crash into the side.
32 however...


If only there was some way with which I could get a bit of structure in the center, and also get the albinos to crash into the side. Oh and lightning speed so I could grab all albinos before they die.

Somehow I bet Marius has more.

Haven't optimized that yet... Currently I have 58, but that's not really reliable since even though I can sometimes get more, I retry because it's not optimal yet.

About Horizontal Transportation Innovation Comittee: I just tried your strategy, and while I did manage to fly a small piece to the other side, the difficulty of this level lies in making sure all goos that stay behind survive. Transferring them to the other platfrom doesn't work, since eventually they just push most goos of the platform...
Edit: Even so, I did just get 51 goos on that level using your strategy. Thanks ^^

Edit: I just made 15 on Fisty's bog. I can now do so quite consistently. Absolute optimum would be 16, I think, but would require epic skill. Or a different strategy I haven't thought of yet.

Wow I thought I was somewhat good at this until I read this thread xD I really have to find a level were I can be first to accomplish something, is there any "summary" of all the levels and who's best at what? If not, would be a nice idea to do just that... Sum all the records up in one single thread, with the starters post listing all the current records.

That you can't beat everyone doesn't mean you aren't somewhat good. There will always be someone better than you... (or at least that's what I thought until I topped the leaderboard... that's when I started releasing my strategies :P)

Aye, do so! It's nice to have a list somewhere, while the leaderboard isn't yet up. I frequent these fora a lot, and as far as I know, the scores in my sig are top of the leaderboard (except Goo Corp).

I'm not a structural engineer, I'm just someone who is unnaturally good at most dexterity games, with a keen technical eye. Also, I played this game way too much. I'm over 33 hours on this profile, and that's not counting the time I spent on the beta, which I think is longer.

I hereby claim the FIRST POSITION on the leaderboard of World of Goo. Kyle said he's working on the leaderboard atm (Goo'd news!), and mentioned that I'm on top atm :) But with only 0.3 meters above #2. Not sure how high I actually am, though...

So yeah. It's probably easy to beat though, especially if you have a tower which is stable to 35 meters.

;)Yes, my video recording tool is amaaaazing! It has all these functionalities, like 2 different recording sizes, and the added feature that it reduces the framerate of the game to 25 instead of 60 when you start recording, even whilst playing!
Incidentally, it's also called Fraps.
Afterwards, I convert it to either XVID or H264 using VirtualDub. The reason the other video was in H264, was because I didn't intend it to be for publication to the internets originally. And H264 just takes up less space, and is cooler.

Made this one XVID so everyone can watch it. Also, recorded in full 800x600 for added niceness :D That sort of does mean it's 33 MB though... if you want a smaller version just let me know.

BTW: the guy who invented Murphy's law (probably Murphy) should be shot. Shooting this video took waaay too many attempts.

@ron: SPOILER: You probably already know this (you coded it and all), but when you throw a Match Goo to fire, it won't ignite. However, if it hits something, then falls through fire, it will ignite. Since I'm throwing up so many balls, a few of them collide. Of those, a few ignite in the fire. Of those, now and then one lives long enough to make it all the way to the structure before it explodes.

also, thats a bit of a 'hit-and-hope' method you have for actually igniting the matches at the the end there marius! try this - bounce one gently up to the flame, then as it drops, hold other ones next to it - they will catch and drop far enough to ignite the structure, and it saves having to hope for random collisions...

Chance of getting that: Hardly any.
That's not even a hardly any for casual gamers, that's a hardly any for me.

Thinking up strategies can be done with no problem in windowed mode, so that's what I'm doing right now :)

Nah, videos take too much effort, plus I end up filling my desktop with several GBs of clips of me trying and failing epically at certain levels! Then uploading time, etc...why bother, printscreen is just as good!

Seeing your strategy for The Red Carpet, and yes - if you can get that structure to fly up to the pipe, without balloons, with a million beauty balls on it, and hold long enough for them to get sucked up, then I will officially retire from playing*.

You misunderstand my strategy :P I want to partially break it up by nudging it off the platform (Breaking it up in 0 moves I can achieve. Not controllably though), then fly a part to the pipe, leave it there. Then bounce beauty into the bottom right entrance using massive wrist speed as her support. The rest should follow automagically.

I just managed to get mine down from 14 to 13 moves on Red Carpet, how's yours coming on?

I didn't say it didn't exist, was just contemplating on how you did it. Before I watch it I'll take a guess. You threw around balls on the white balls construction, somehow getting it up to the pipe. The greens are stuck to the ground, I don't imagine you'd be able to get them lose. It's the only way I can think of that you'll get a chain of two balls up there.

And now I've seen it, quite genious, I'm guessing this method can be used for other levels as well.

any chance you could put your videos on Youtube?  I can't play them from your site.

Youtube's quality is horrible. I have encoded my videos with XVID, which is quite a common codec. If you download VLC media player then you don't need to bother with codec packs: everything should work out of the box if you open the video with VLC.

So if you just rightclick -> Save as, then browse to where you saved it, rightclick -> Open with -> VLC, or instructions similar to that, it should work.

To get back on topic: With the leaderboard up, I've been trying to beat people's fastest times. These are my accomplishments so far (with complete disregard for number of balls and moves :D ):

Volcanic Percolator Day Spa: 29 seconds
Leap Hole: 9 seconds
Beauty and the Electric Tentacle: 17 seconds
Observatory Observation Station: 35 seconds (really proud of this one ::) )
Going Up: 9 seconds EDIT: D'oh, someone already beat me
Infesty the Worm: 93 seconds (159 with all balls)

None of these are anywhere near ideal, they're just currently best :D Let's see how long they last.

As you may have noticed, I've been on top (moves) for deliverance for a while, with 3 moves, but you hadn't seen a video yet. That's because the video I had of it, had an extremely stupid mistake in it: I threw the very last throw a tad too hard, which made it not latch on, increasing my moves from 2 to 3.

However, I have now done Deliverance in 2 moves :D (Video will be online in the link in my sig shortly).

Nope, it's just luck. Add to that the slim chance of getting a loose square and being fast enough to actually grab it to secure it, makes for a whole lot of attempts.

I've been wondering about Chain, though. Doing it the old fashioned way gets me 25 balls (in 5 moves EDIT: nevermind, that was 21 :P) but on the leaderboard there's a guy with 39 balls, which would be every single goo on the level including the 14 in the chain itself. My first thought was foul play, but there's six other guys with more than 25 balls (and the guy spent a good 27 minutes and 427 moves getting all those balls).

Am I missing something? Is there a way to break the chain somehow? Or is that level just a favorite with cheaters?

It's definitely going to be less than 20 minutes. I got all chain goos disconnected last time I tried, but had trouble getting to the pipe, then accidentally let some green ones slip into the pipe, which messed up my system, so yeah. Haven't started over yet.

Finally, I'm first again... The tower was looking pretty nice, too... until the last upload...


Now I can't go in there and cut off the top... While I think it had the potential for at least 42 meters...

For everyone that wants to build one, a tip:

Make sure you keep the legs connected at the bottom. I removed the chain between them (to get more goo balls available), and the end result was something like this  ;D

Yeah, it also depends on the width of your base, if there's a small spacing then th tower won't budge, if it's spread out, then yes the tower will start moving outwards :D

My tower had some chains at the bottom, I took one off, didn't budge, took off another, and another, the last one I took off the tower base started separating, i was like "FUCK"  So I put it back, and it stopped moving, I was quite relieved :D

thanks... i managed to do 30 since i couldnt break the whole chain.
if you have troubles reaching the pipe just get to it before breaking the chain and leave the 2 goos connected there (you can use 1 green and 1 black goo)

I have the top two fastest times on Fly Away Little Ones!  My fastest time beats number three by 5 whole seconds.

I have a few other spots on the leaderboard, but this is my greatest achievement.

You cant get it out. Throwing goos towards that spot kills them.
