Wow...I was at least willing to give Tiki Monkeys the benefit of the doubt, but this.......not so much. Very clunky. Not even close to as good as WoG. No matter how many clones people make, I can't see anything beating the original. I'll take bacteria over monkeys though. |

I like it! Especially the new types. Some new ideas for levels too. :D |

In l33t, it $UX0RZ. |
Re: An insult to goos everywhere! | thB | 09/29/2009 - 17:10 |
Oh yes, it really does suck. Btw, I managed to crash Flash (and the browser with it) while freeing some of those bacteria from their cage by throwing them through the wall. Yes, this works just like in WoG, it's just... like, worse as the game in general. This game is so bad. :o |
Re: An insult to goos everywhere! | TheHermit | 10/03/2009 - 04:42 |
I got to level 33 before my browser crashed due to another page I was looking at. :(
With a faster engine and progress saving this would be a great game rather than just good. |

In the Suggestions section Vodyanoi8 calls HT an "OBVIOUS RIPOFF" of WoG. I think you'll find there are enough differences between WOG and HT for it to be classed as "inspired by" and NOT a copy by a legal team. A copy would use the same game engine, graphics style, Goo/Bacteria types, obsticals, level design, sounds, music, etc.
Let's look at the differences and similarities:
They definately both use the same central OLD IDEA of the bridge building type of game. So that bit isn't a copy of WoG, in fact Tower of Goo, World of Goo, Tiki Towers and Huje Tower have all copied the basic mechanic from the VERY OLD Bridge Builder, a version of which was first on the PC for MS-DOS in the 80's.
In WoG you can use a Goo to make a new point with fresh joints or just a new joint. HT ONLY lets you make new points with joints, like the original Bridge Builder mechanic. So that is "copied" from Bridge Builder NOT WoG.
The music the two games use is different, as are the sounds. The idea of the high pitched "voice" for the Goo/Bacteria isn't original to either game. For example Worms, and Lemmings before that, used squeaky voices for their appeal.
Both games have you build toward a target. WoG towards a pipe, HT towards a line. During WoG's development they changed the "level completion target" from crossing a line to reaching a pipe so you could claim that HT just decided not to add the pipe, but HT didn't need the pipe because...
... In WoG you must get as many free Goo out the pipe as possible to win. HT just wants you to hold a point above the line for 5 seconds. Plus...
... Free Goo climb your structure towards the highest point you've built. Free Bacteria stay off your structure. I'm sure some will think that the only reason the HT doesn't have the Bacteria climb the structure towards a pipe is because it is written in Flash and therefore too much for the game to do. Whatever the reason it's still a difference.
Level design is mostly different with just a few similarites mainly in the first few levels as you learn about the basics.
One area that has many similarities is in the types of Goo/Bacteria, although both have some that the other doesn't. WoG has the skulls HT has wheels, WoG has Beauty/Ugly HT has the blue LONG link for example.
Throughout the history of games there have been advances made based on previous games made by others. So to call it an "obvious ripoff" shows that they haven't taken a proper look at the two games and are just using "Brand loyalty" to cloud your judgement. At least they have given credit that it was inspired by WoG, something that rarely happens!

Sorry, dude. I guess it doesn't count as intellectual property theft after all. Now, if it had stolen the code like BloxWorld (No offense, guys!) then 2D Boy would have to take legal action. But it's just a harmless would-be project. At least it payed its tributes. |
Re: An insult to goos everywhere! | TheHermit | 10/03/2009 - 13:41 |
Intellectual property theft is VERY difficult to prove when the "original" is made up of many old ideas.
One way that 2DBoy may look at it is that that some may say to friends "Have you played Huje Towers? It's not as good as World of Goo!" and get further sales that way... ;) |

I'll give them that they gave some credit to WoG. And sure they have their differences, but when you look at the main flow of the two games, it's the same general idea. Maybe "brand loyalty" as you called it, is "clouding my judgment" a little, but not really. It's still a ripoff of World of Goo.
Plus, with a free version of WoG out there on the internet for anyone to play, some people might decide to just play HT instead of buying WoG, and decreasing sales. You can't tell me that isn't fair to 2D Boy.
And HT SUCKS!!!!!! It's too slow and the bacteria just stand there. Just changing a few points in the game doesn't make it separate. |

And have you taken a look at level 6? Almost exactly like Ivy Towers. And there are yellow things with spikes. And green things that detach.
Okay fine. You can have your opinion and I can have mine. I can accept that it isn't enough to go to court. |

It's nice to see you've read what I wrote, although you seemed to have missed a couple of bits. I think the basic shape of that level is closer to Reguratation Station (just the walls).

Huzzah! But, seriously. We should now be thankful for HT as to how crappy it is. It credits WoG, and that's some great free advertisement. So, yeah, it would be good to bring up HT in a conversation with a friend and point then towards WoG. ABBREVINATE! |

Re: An insult to goos everywhere! | Buttersnack | 10/04/2009 - 19:35 |
This interests me, mostly because of the game I am most loyal to.
I spend my time on Incredibots, a physics building game. It was called a rip-off of Phun, a similar downloadable game that was released earlier. HOWEVER, Incredibots ended up not being considered stolen because: -It was in Flash, like HT is -It has some key differences (more so than HT, but I guess we can let that slide) -IB was widely accepted as a better game than Phun (this is the key point, as HT is not near as good as WoG)
So no, it's not stolen, per say, it's just not that good. |

I certainly wouldn't say WoG to anyone... I get called a racist! Much safer to say World of Goo. ;) |
