Which version to buy?strfryed10/10/2008 - 13:40

Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I couldn't find anything.

I'm a Wii owner and GNU/Linux user trying to decide which version to get.

I'd prefer the Wii version because it's easy, I like the Wii remote control, and I don't have to worry about nasty binary dependencies in the future making WoG unplayable without a VM.

The downside, of course, is if the game is going to have a number of expansions, add-ons, mods, or anything similar then I'm hosed.

Anyone have any thoughts?  Anyone know what the future of the game looks like?  Will future expansions be more standalone, like a sequel that might be on WiiWare as well or will it be more incremental?

I'd go with Wii myself, since it has multiplayer.

I'd also like to know what the future is going to hold in terms of downloadable content, expansions, or mods and if they are going to be offered on the WiiWare version as well. I am torn between getting the Wii version or the PC version.

Also, one question, does the Wii version support the online leaderboards too? I think I read that it does in the IGN (9.5!) Review.

It's definitely an issue: the Wii version has multiplayer, but the PC version will no doubt have a level-editor (and such) in the future.  Something wrong with getting both?  ;D  This game is less than half the price of a lot of the crap on the market right now, and developers like 2D Boy need all the support they can get.

If your $40 richer than you should be, get both.  If not, I would recommend the PC one, because of the possibility of expansion packs, etc.

I had been leaning towards the Wii version (Moon Chapter, Local Multiplayer, fits the controller nicely) but as I'm in Europe and this won't be available for around 6 months I've gone for the PC/Mac/Linux version.

It's a real shame 2DBoy chose to go for such a huge delay and infalted price for Europe.

As far as I know, the decision to withhold the game from the european market for the time being was made by Nintendo of Europe. I'm not certain though, confirmation or just information would be welcome.

I'd still go with the pc version. I'm holding my hopes up for a level editor.

Not sure about that, NOE don't tend to dictate in quite that way. Confirmation of the reasons behind this decision would of course be good, and while I don't want to detract from the stellar work the guys have done, they do seem to have dropped the ball on this IMHO.

By the sounds of things the decisions were to do with distribution and 2dboy have handed a lot of control over to RTL (or are at least taking a more hands off approach). Article here.

Yes, I know distribution differences, localisation, etc mean extra costs and time, but I can't help but feel 2dboy don't care about the European market or customer. I'm sure there could have been a quicker turnaround and lower cost with a WiiWare release if that had been wanted and pushed for. I'd have glady paid for this on console for 1000 Wii points but not a chance now.

Charging the equivalent of over US$50 for what in the US will be US10 as well as asking people to wait for 6 months is not going to win customers or community support I'm afraid. One extra level isn't worth that much.

except that it is 1500 points in the US not 1000

Re: Which version to buy?hotblack10/13/2008 - 01:09

Apologies I didn't know this, previous info such as the interview with Kyle linked to above had suggested 1000. I'd have been perfectly happy with 1500 Wii points which is around $US15 or in Europe €15/just over £10, instead of €40 or just over €30 (equivalent to well over $50).

This is a great game and 2dboy deserve to be rewarded for it, that's why I preordered the PC/Mac/Linux version. But I fear due to shortsighted publishing decisions it's going to not do as well as it should in Europe.
