Beating Uncle Dave - Now with video!Marius03/26/2008 - 03:28

My tower needs a whole rebuild. I've been using it since 210 balls or so, sometimes weakening the base to get higher. Bad idea. I've been in place 2 for a bit, then tried to improve it. Anyway, I've got the most balls on all levels EXCEPT FISTY. I don't know how you get the 11th, I can't manage! The first one to message me a screenshot of his 11 balls solution gets a screenshot of my 82 balls solution to tower of goo.

Playing lots of world of goo:
Pros:
Whoawesome!

Cons:
Everything is wobbly right after you stop.

Edit: Read the rest of the thread for progress, or follow this link for a video.

Hehehe. Amen to that. I have a terrible feeeling that as soon as I go back onto WoGCo my entire tower is going to pancake.

On another note, I have managed to get Fisty's Bog with 11 balls, but I cant seem to replicate my success.

Also: I could see solution swapping becoming a large trade on these here forums...

PS: 82 balls? Wow.

Re: 244 ballsMarius03/26/2008 - 10:31

Heh, I'm quite happy with the 82 :) Also with the 40 balls for Ode to the bruidge builder, although I think it may be possible to shave of a teeny bit more. But then again, technically it might be possible to get upwards of 85 on tower of goo...

Wewt! I made 11 :D

That's 145 balls to use :P Now for the new tower...

Also, my tower is constantly falling over as soon as I click the factory. Then I have to scroll up fast, cut off the top, then rebuild the top as well as I can :P I've been above you before, but I'm preparing for a huge blow, which I hope gets me near Big winner uncle dave :) (What reference is that btw, anyway? Is it a betatester, or is it something 2DBoy put in?)

Re: 244 balls - Edit: 245Ballisticsfood03/27/2008 - 08:18

Well, in my current copy of Pers.dat (I lost the old one, and I cant get it back! :P) i managed to get into 6th place using 150 balls and an optimised tower structure. When I tried to use that tower structure with 200 balls the whole thing fell over in a blaze of glory. It's true that it only buckled in one place (lower left corner), but it still fell over.

On the whole tower falling as soon as you go in, most of my towers are pretty stable. I've got time to get to the top and stabilise them before they fall. The problem with my no 2 tower is that i took out several balls from lower down, and I think it's just going to collapse straight downwards, not fall over.

Silly me.

Re: 244 balls - Edit: 245Marius03/27/2008 - 08:43

I've made a new tower, and was in second place for a bit last night (GMT), but I had some balls leftover, so I need to do some more attempts. I think I can get above 34 meter with some effort.

Re: 244 balls - Edit: 245Marius03/27/2008 - 15:11

There we go... Just 1.8 meters to go until Big Winner Uncle Dave... (Except I'm going to try and go higher now, so my 34.2 will probably be gone when you see this.)
Edit: I've seen the 36.2 flash on my screen for a moment... Now I just need that second of stability for it to upload, and a quick jab at the save and exit...
Edit: 0.7 to go on the leaderboard...
Edit: Also, 42 balls on ode to the bruidgebuilder
Edit: Whatthehell! 85 on Tower of goo!

What?! I've been trying that! Very nice :D

Edit: Got it as well :) Knowing it's possible is half the task, really.

By the way, you might want to let one of your 2 towers collapse and just use one copy of pers.dat as your scoring account. It looks dodgy otherwise.

Also, at the time of posting, 0.7M more! You can do it!

Re: 244 balls - Edit: 245 - Edit: 247 - Edit: 250 - Edit: 251Marius03/28/2008 - 06:33

Mya, I'm not using the old one, which is unstable like a jelly tower. I've already reported the bug that I'm in the highscore twice to the forums.

I could switch to the old pers.dat, and tear it down, to tear my own score down, but the problem is that I might end up in the highscore 3 times, which is just plain weird.

I'll definitely try to get the 36, but I'm contemplating going with this one, or building a wholly new tower. The current one has leaning to the right problems. I probably shouldn't add massive weights to the side to connect a link, then remove the massive weights...

Re: 244 balls - Edit: 245 - Edit: 247 - Edit: 250 - Edit: 251Marius03/29/2008 - 13:29

Won't be long now.. I've got a tower that's stable up to 30 meters...

Edit:
WOOT!!!

Beat THAT, Big Winner Uncle Dave! [=40pt]37.5 meters [/]IN YOUR FACE!

Hehe :)

Building really systematically, with a nice way to make the sides steeper than pyramid-steepness really payed off. My current base is only slightly larger than the screen, but the tower is remarkably stable.

Also, do I get the right to hear the story behind Big Winner Uncle Dave now?

Did you do anything to that pers.dat then? Or are you just using 1, for the sake of using 1?

Re: 244 balls - Edit: 245 - Edit: 247 - Edit: 250 - Edit: 251 - EAT DIRT, UNCLE Ballisticsfood03/30/2008 - 08:41

It's a bit of a long story, but the abridged version is this: I had the ballisticsfood pers.dat, which I used for scoring on the leaderboard, and I had another that I used for messing about on. I said I wouldn't use the 'messing about' account online, and I still won't despite the fact that I have actually lost my scoring version of pers.dat.

Oh, and if you load up the lower scoring pers.dat and let the tower fall it'll get rid of your duplicated scoreboard entry.

Did you check this? Because it *does* ask for the magic key again...

Also, I managed to do what I thought should be possible for a long time: I completed fisty with more balls leftover than 11. Bringing my total to 253 balls! (But the topic title is full :P)

Edit: Well, I just went to try it, and it kind of deleted the wrong one... Hmm. Strange. Oh well. Guess I'll have to beat Uncle Dave again :)

Re: Beating Uncle Dave - Now with video!Marius03/30/2008 - 19:43

36.9. It's not 37.5, but it'll do for now.
Because of the difficulty of taking a screenshot of the tower, I've made a short video of the final 10 meters, including an overview of the entire tower. Click the picture to download it.

As you can see, I've got lots of goo leftover, but not so much stability. I'll make a new tower soon which will be 1 triangle wider...

Edit: My server is a little unstable as well... If you can't download it or see the picture, it's probably because it crashed.
