OK...

...so I tried and tried and the best I could manage was a lowly 28 goos, achieved by stacking up a tower and waiting for it to fall past the pipe a number of times, sucking up a few goos each time round.

How on earth are people getting 38 goos on this?!

The way it's done is through a bug, actually. It will be impossible to do in the full version.
You can drag a green goo through the wall, then attach it to the grey base. You should be able to figure out the rest yourself.

My score without bugusing would be 35 on that level :)

That was a mistake really... I wanted to backup my old, unstable tower, do I backup'd my pers.dat. But then, when I made a new tower, it gave me a second highscore... I didn't think that was fair, so I went back to the old one to break it down, but it deleted my new highscore instead... (Which was 37.5, incidentally)
So now I don't know how to delete the second highscore...

Edit: Oya, the new one is gone atm, since I'm trying to get it higher than 36.9...

In tower of goo, you can't remove the goos once you placed them, unless they hit the side. If you manage to get goos hanging from the pipe which aren't connected to the floor, I'd be dumbfounded. You do use the suction of the pipe however. My 85-leftover tower would never stay up without the pipe suction.

ultimately its all about the speed with the tower of goo though isnt it - i just need to practice getting as high as possible as fast as possible, then using the suck.

Ha! its easy! just build a perfectly shaped 4-sided star-like figure and you will remain near the pipe whenever your "thing" rotates  ;D
now, how do you get more than 29 in ode to bridge builder? (oh the memories... yah, I made an impossible bridge, the train somehow managed to get across and the bridge fell apart right after it! looked really...scary! but cool  8) )
