Hello
I installed World Of Goo Demo on my son's Edubuntu 8.04 linux laptop. We fire it up and get music but just a blank black screen. I have tried changing to native full screen resolution (1024 x 768) in config.txt and also playing 800x600 windowed - no joy.
The laptop is a 1.2Ghz processor, 512GB RAM, 61GB space on drive. The video card is an S3 SuperSavage IX/C SDR if that means anything to anybody...
I assume the demo and full versions share the same technical requirements? Now, I am happy to purchase the full licensed .deb version if it is more likely to work but don't really want to throw the money away.
Any guidance much appreciated.

Could you post the output produced when you enter glxinfo in a terminal?
I suspect that this particular video card just doesn't provide the level of OpenGL support required by the game.

Yes, the demo and full version use the same binary, so if you can't get the demo to run properly then buying the full version won't help you, I'm afraid. Last modified Tue, 05/19/2009 - 10:14 by Soultaker |

I'm afraid I'm not sure what precisely is wrong in your case, which is why I hadn't replied earlier. If you have installed the latest version available of the graphics drivers, and the game still doesn't run, then I'm afraid the game just isn't going to work on this laptop.
You could try upgrading to the most recent version of Ubuntu like spazturtle suggested, but I can't guarantee the game will then run.
By the way, just to ensure we have all the info in the thread, could you also post the contents of your logfile (at $HOME/.WorldOfGoo/WorldOfGoo.log)? |
hello again
well, I haven't a clue what I am looking at but here's the ~/.WorldOfGoo/WorldOfGoo.log:

I see a few file open errors but the files referred to do not exist on the drive - nor do they exist on my work laptop which plays the game very well (this is a lot newer dual-core machine running Crunchbang so is very speedy).
Any advice very welcome
@spazturtle - FWIW, my understanding is not that Ubuntu have stopped supporting Edubuntu, it can just be loaded as an extra "educational" desktop in the same manner as Xubuntu and Kubuntu. They all build from the core Ubuntu base. I still use the term Edubuntu as shorthand for this. |
Yes, the log file looks normal. I was mainly interested in the video mode that was being selected, but no real surprises there either.
It's still not too clear to me what the problem is, but I have another test you can perform, if you like, for which you will have to download a little test program, which you will need to download, mark executable, then run, and then please post the output you get here. Hopefully, this gives some more information on the video mode that gets selected by SDL on this system.
(For example, open a console, and type:)
"wget" "http://2dboy.com/TopSecretTransfer/linux-test/sdltest"<br />chmod a+x sdltest<br />./sdltest<br />
By the way, do other OpenGL-based applications run correctly on this laptop?

Yes - not had problems as far as I am aware....
Again, many thanks for taking an interest. Let me know if anything strikes you as useful. In the meantime, I am letting my son run WOG on my first-gen eeepc which runs it perfectly....

Hmm, that output looks exactly as it should, so that doesn't give me any more information, unfortunately...
I don't have any more concrete suggestions, I'm afraid. You could try upgrading your drivers and/or your operating system to a more recent version, but of course that's a lot of effor just to get this game to work. Besides that, I don't really have more suggestions to offer. |
