Kubuntu 9.10 video problemmlacons11/28/2009 - 13:32

Running WOG on Kubuntu 9.10 and the screen goes out of sync.

Computer is a Shuttle box with an ati Radeon 9100 IGP video card built in. Samsung 4:3 aspect lcd monitor set to 1280x1024 with refresh set to auto. The other refresh option is 0.0 hz. I've had no other problems with this system.

I've test loaded the same .deb on a lenovo laptop running the same os. It has a 16:9 monitor and works great.

I think the problem is tied to the monitor not supporting the refresh rate or aspect ratio WOG changes to when run.

Suggestions?
BTW: I love the game. Very nice work. I can't wait to play it on my desktop machine.
Thanks

Your system probably doesn't support the default resolution of 800x600. Could post the output of `xrandr' to verify?

A simple fix is to edit the config file at /opt/WorldOfGoo/properties/config.txt and select a more suitable resolution. The native resolution probably works best.

Are you sure you have a 4:3 monitor though? The resolution of 1280x1024 suggests an aspect ratio of 5:4 (which should work as well).

You are correct on all accounts. I guess 4:3 is old school (640x480, 800,600). I just assumed 1280x1024 was 4:3.. I never did the math before.

So I changed the file you said but the performance on this built-in video card doesn't seem to be fast enough. It's big time slow. Thank God for Alt+F4.

I pulled the monitor's manual and configured xorg.conf to match the monitor, it must be too old to report to Kubuntu. None of the other modes worked. They all had sync problems.

I guess I'll punt on this computer and run it on the laptop unless you have other solutions.

Thanks for the info and... Great game!

Sorry forgot to include the xradr

Your monitor should have an option for displaying its optimal resolution and refresh rate. Just look through the menus until you find it.

If all else fails, you should be able to play at 800x600 but in windowed mode (hit Alt-Enter in-game to toggle between full-screen and windowed mode, and/or edit the config.txt to start up in windowed mode).

1280x1024 is 16:9

wog supports: 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 you have to make sure wog uses the right one, do this by editing the config file like Soultaker suggested.

1280 x 1024 can be 4:3 or 16:9 depending on the monitor. Mine is 4:3 yet my friends laptop is 16:9

If you had a screen with square pixels then it would be neither! ;)

World of Goo supports many different aspect ratios (although below 4:3 and above 2.something you will get black borders on the Linux versions, and the Windows version refuses to run altogether) but the game always assumes square pixels. So you should select a display resolution that closely matches the aspect ratio of your monitor. (For a 5:4 screen, 1280x1024 is ideal, but on a traditional 4:3 monitor you should use something like 1280x960 instead.)

I also have a Samsung monitor it supports all resolutions BUT only at 60hz refresh rate
All other retes I get "Not Optimal" for a short time then the screen goes black.
I will try editing the config file.
