Will post here, but I have the same issue on 32 bit Vista.

I'm having the same problem...Vista 32 and crash on startup. I re-installed the Chapter 1 Preview and it still loaded fine. Just for kicks I tried copying the "WorldOfGoo.exe" from the Chapter 1 preview into the full version install, but of course that didn't work and it crashed as well. So to check again I reinstalled Chapter 1 preview and it started fine. Deleted and installed final version...back to crashing.
Here's a cut-and-paste from the "Crash.txt" file that was deposited in my World of Goo folder:

I had the same problem (Exception on startup/StackWalk failed (error 299)). Turned out that I hadn’t attached my speakers to my computer and therefore did not have a sound device.
Make sure you have a sound device installed, otherwise World Of Goo won't start. There are virtual sound drivers if you do not have a soundcard.
Hope that this will somebody. Cheers!

Nope, I definitely have a sound device installed (IDT Audio driver for Intel P35-based board, zero issues with any other game or piece of software I have installed). Still getting the error though. As I said, the Chapter 1 Preview of the game still works fine, so something is different in this new .exe that is causing the error. |
Adding crash.txt and system specs.

Sent an e-mail to and got a response from Ron. We went back-and-forth a couple of times and finally traced the problem. We became really perplexed when I installed the game on another machine with WinXP and I still had the crash. Long story short, it turns out the anti-malware app ThreatFire (which I was running on both machines) has a conflict with World of Goo right now.
Are you running ThreatFire on your machine? If so, uninstall it completely and the crashing should go away. It's not enough to disable scanning (I tried that)...you must remove it completely. It worked for me on both machines, and I hope it works for you.
By the way, the only other app I've had that conflicted with ThreatFire was Joost. I've been pretty happy with it, but maybe it's time to switch to another AntiVirus app? |
According to ThreatFire technical support this is a known issue associated with the DRM software used by World of Goo. The following is an alternative to uninstalling ThreatFire. Provided by ThreatFire support:
"As of yet, the only way to solve this issue is to shut down ThreatFire before playing your game, however this will compromise the security of your system. In order to shut down ThreatFire, you must hold ctrl and right-click on the tray icon, selecting "exit." then, in a run command, type "net stop threatfire" and this will shut down ThreatFire, instead of having to uninstall." |
There's no DRM in World of Goo. |
