"Fatal Error!" When Trying to Run GFWL Versionscarritt12/22/2009 - 23:51

I just bought the game on Games for Windows Live, and I got it to run after installing.  However, every attempt to run the game since has resulted in the game crashing at the load screen (where all the different random sentences go by).  When I alt-tab out to the desktop, I find a window that's titled "Fatal Error!" that says "An unexpected error has occurred!" and has a whole bunch of code in it:

Exception: Access Violation (code 0xc0000005) at address 6D026326 in thread 1F08

Any ideas?  I've tried uninstalling, re-downloading, and re-installing, and I'm still getting that error.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: "Fatal Error!" When Trying to Run GFWL Versionscarritt12/23/2009 - 00:03

Oh!  I should add that I've previously purchased the game through Steam and played through it entirely, so I know for a fact that the game runs on my computer.  I've gone back and re-installed my Steam version, and that works just fine, so there's something wrong with my GFW version.

Re: "Fatal Error!" When Trying to Run GFWL VersionAerodynamo12/23/2009 - 01:25

Funny thing, I am getting this EXACT same error, but it only started popping up after I played it for an hour the first time it installed!

I've since uninstalled, reinstalled, disabled and uninstalled/reinstalled my spyware stuff (I referenced another thread for this info), and no luck.

Any help?

I've tried every "fix" on x360a, the GFWL forum, and on here. I've tried installing on my XP Pro SP3 32-bit lap top and my Windows 7 64-bit desktop.

As others have experienced, the game worked fine when first bought and installed, after turning it off for the night it will not load past the loading screen.

I did find one solution that did work, BUT that solution is to delete the LIVE config file, so you can no longer sign into LIVE when playing.
The problem is obviously in the LIVE configuration somewhere because loading the game without connecting to LIVE loads it fine every time.

For anyone that doesn't care about achievements or playing on LIVE, you can delete (I'd back it up first) this file "WorldOfGoo.exe.cfg" and the game will run.

To put it nicely: I'm a first time customer for 2D Boy and this is not how you want to start a good customer relationship. I paid to play this game on LIVE and unlock achievements and I, along with most people, can not do so. I'm very unhappy.

Re: "Fatal Error!" When Trying to Run GFWL Versionscarritt12/27/2009 - 18:20

Does anyone know if this is a problem on 2DBoy's end, or is it on GFWL's end?

Re: "Fatal Error!" When Trying to Run GFWL VersionDemonI8112/27/2009 - 18:24

No one's taking responsibility on either end yet.

Re: "Fatal Error!" When Trying to Run GFWL VersionAerodynamo12/30/2009 - 16:59

This is pretty awful. I could have purchased the game for a $1, but I heard rumors that it would be available under GFWL. I purchase it for more money, and what do I get? A version of the game that doesn't run.

The only way I have found that I am able to get it running is if I start another game, then Alt+Tab and start WoG, then close the other game. It's an annoying process to go through, but tends to work all of the time. Give it a shot, guys.

This is embarrassing, though, and the problem needs to be fixed ASAP.

To be fair, the holiday season's just now winding down, so let's give them a little flack; they might not be checking the forums, and may not be aware of the problem.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with a Games for Windows Live tech support?  I can't find anyone to contact in the case of a game that isn't working.  The only thing I found was something telling me to contact the developer themself (which brought me here).

*bump*

Anyone have any idea how to fix this problem yet?  Haven't heard anything in a while.

Re: "Fatal Error!" When Trying to Run GFWL VersionVengerUK01/22/2010 - 16:48

Getting the same problem on two separate Windows 7 machines...

I've tried various steps indicated on this forum to no avail.  I'd really like to play this game - it's great!  Devs - happy to provide any data you require if you're interested in debugging this.

Cheers!

Re: "Fatal Error!" When Trying to Run GFWL VersionGMMan01/22/2010 - 19:05

@DemonI81: It's not actually 2D Boy's fault. Everyone else running non-GFWL versions are not having this problem. It's purely Microsoft and their DRM (of sorts).

The problem in question seems to be something wrong with Microsoft's Visual C++ 9.0 library. World of Goo uses the version 8 library. Try searching up for the VC++ redistributable and install that to get a fresh copy of the file.

Any news on this? I just got the game and only got to play it once before I started hitting this exact same issue. Any help would be appreciated...

Re: "Fatal Error!" When Trying to Run GFWL VersionGMMan04/23/2010 - 16:29

Try recreating your profile (delete pers2.dat) and update your DirectX (with the DX Web Setup).

Re: "Fatal Error!" When Trying to Run GFWL VersionRuffReader10/21/2010 - 14:52

I had the same issue and tried all of the solutions suggested on these forums (updating DirectX, changing access on config.txt file, running as administrator, etc.).  The only thing that seems to work for now is disconnecting from the internet before starting WoG.  You can then reconnect and log into GFWL after WOG has loaded.  I do not understand why this works.

New Edit:

right, i have ticked the "Read-Only" box for WorldOfGoo.exe (right click -> properites) and seems to be working fine !!!!

hope this helps some of you!
gd luck.
