Fatal error on start upNekoDaimyo10/07/2008 - 21:16

I click the WoG shortcut/.exe, the screen goes black as the resolution adjusts for the game, then after a moment, it returns to my standard resolution, displaying my desktop with one 800x600 area black, with the following error window in the middle of it all:
"Failed creating the Direct3D device."

I have no other programs running that would be graphically intensive (nor generally intensive), and have a Radeon X1300 video card, 1GB of RAM, and a 2.93 GhZ P4.

What can I submit, to hopefully resolve this?

Re: Fatal error on start upsoledango10/14/2008 - 21:55

The same happens to me: fade to black, resolution changes, mouse pointer appears as well as the task bar... and that's it.

My config:
WinXP SP3
Intel E8500, 3.16GHz w/ 4Go RAM
nVidia GTX 280

All drivers and BIOS updated.

... I'm sure the game is fantastic, and would love to be actually able to play it... anybody any idea?

Re: Fatal error on start up - SOLVED!!!!!soledango10/15/2008 - 16:23

!!!!!SOLVED!!!!!

After the resolution changed, my FIREWALL (Comodo) wanted to ask me what to do with the application. The box appeared OUT OF THE SCREEN though (fixed position in the "standard" resolution), so no way to validate it!

Easy workaround: Add the WorldofGoo.exe to the trusted application in the firewall settings, and goo away =]

It doesn't work for me!

Re: Fatal error on start upErgo10/16/2008 - 17:34

I was having the same issue and, oddly, changing the rez in the config file appeared to fix it (this was after installing/uninstalling, trying the demo, uninstalling/reinstalling demo, etc) despite its admonition that my computer could very well explode, taking me and my dog with it (or somesuch). You can find it at: \\WorldOfGoo\properties\config.txt

I hope this helps someone else.

Re: Fatal error on start upron01/16/2009 - 10:53

in the cases we've seen so far, this is an issue caused by anti-malware software or firewall software.  if you have anti-virus or anti-malware software, try disabling it.  threatfire and look'n'stop are both known to cause crashes like this (threatfire actually needs to be uninstalled in order for the game to run, disabling isn't enough).

also, check out this post for the firewall issue:

Re: Fatal error on start up314stone01/18/2009 - 13:49

I have had the black screen error on Vista. Network is not the problem, instead the game demands administrator privileges. Running as admin, everything works.

Now the problem is, that my 6 and 9 year old kids love the game, and I can not give them admin rights, nor can I be here to star the game every time they want to play.

Fix it, please!

314stone:  IIRC there is a program called 'raise my rights' which will do this for you.  Not sure how it will run, but it might help you out :)
