When I open World of Goo it says connecting to server and then the screen stays black. Did I do something wrong? o-o

Do you have any more info? Is it the first time you ran the game? A few people have had something similar happen, where they ran the game fine, but when launching again, their "pers.dat" file had somehow become corrupt and they get a black screen. The fix (for now) is to delete "pers.dat" - let us know if that works!

Re: Black!BlahBlah03/06/2008 - 22:33

This is the first time I've tried to play the game. I'm looking for the pers.dat thing right now. It hasn't worked for me at all yet so I'm hoping this will fix it and I can play. Thank you for the reply :)

Edit: Haha, I can't find the file. I'm sure I'm just not looking in the right spot.
This is what my folder looks like:

Is it in one of the other folders? I looked through some of them and didn't see anything that said "pers.dat"

pers.dat should be located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\2DBoy\WorldOfGoo

but it sounds like that's not your problem since it's the first time running the game. Did anyone else ever have this happen? If that doesn't work, I would also suggest turning off all anti-virus, and all anti-everything.

Turn off your firewall, see if "suddenly" all problems go away.

I'm experiencing a similar issue. I run World of Goo, and a black window pops up.

Sometimes the window will close by itself after, say, 15 seconds .. sometimes it stays up until I close it manually. I've never gotten any farther (though I did check for a pers.dat file, just in case .. no luck).

Please let me know if I can provide any additional information to assist in fixing this issue.

Well my firewall has never been on and I recently uninstalled my anti-virus. I'm starting to think it's my Spybot that's messing it up. Sometimes spybot will deny access to programs that try to connect to the internet. The thing is though that it usually asks me for permission to block or allow. When I run WoG nothing pops up. Maybe I'll uninstall spybot and see if that will work.

Well I've given up. I'm sure when the game is released it should work for me.

Re: Black!kyle03/19/2008 - 04:20

mrbill and blahblah, are you guys able to try on another computer, or even the same computer, but on a different internet connection? In both cases, it sounds like it is not able to connect to validate the beta version you have installed. Luckily the final version of the game won't require validation.

Re: Black!ron03/20/2008 - 11:07

we've had this reported by other people as well.  for most this is a anti-spyware/anti-virus/firewall issue where the game can't connect to our servers.  but in other cases it was solved by upgrading the latest nvidia graphics drivers.  (do you guys have nvidia cards?)

I had the same problem. I just got a small black window, but when I alt-tabbed to another window then alt-tabbed back and used alt-enter to get fullscreen it startet to work for some weird reason. And now everything seems fine.
