WinXP Home SP3, 1280x800 Dell laptop.

When starting WoG from a limited account, a black window about 2/3 of the screen appears momentarily in the top left corner, immediately followed by the "WorldOfGoo.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience." dialog.

When starting from the admin account WoG was installed in, WoG starts but when trying to create a profile, no characters appear when typed, and the Ok button does not work.

I do not see a crash file anywhere in the WoG install directory.

I remember that it was said that World of Goo has some problems with limited accounts on XP. You don't have a crash.log because WoG doesn't have permission to write to any Program Files folders.

As for the can't type name problem, do you see the blinking cursor? Try clicking in the text input box if you haven't already. World of Goo won't let you click OK if there's no name inputted.
