Game won't start - Vista 32bitcthorpe10/13/2008 - 22:50

Sorry.. accidentally posted this in suggestions instead of here is support.

I just purchased the game and cannot get it to start.  I am not getting crashes of any kind.  The process starts and does nothing.  Process Explorer is showing no CPU access or disk access.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling as well as rebooting my computer.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit.  I am using NOD32 for AV, System Safety Monitor for HIPS, and Look n Stop for firewall.  I have tried disabling those programs' protection and still no go with WoG.  I have tried the program compatibility settings in Vista (ie. run as Windows XP SP2, disable themes, etc) and still no go with WoG.

I have emailed support, but I was hoping to get a quick response here.

Thanks,
Carl

Check that you have your Windows OS up to date, same for drivers.

Re: Game won't start - Vista 32bitlocomorto10/14/2008 - 03:07

Try running as administrator. Unfortunately I need to do that under Vista 64 bit to get the game to work :(.

Re: Game won't start - Vista 32bitmusta10/14/2008 - 05:55

i have an admin account and is working flawless on Vista-32bit...

Re: Game won't start - Vista 32bitcthorpe10/14/2008 - 17:40

I am running it as administrator, and everything is up to date.  Still no success running, and no response as of yet from support.  I'm hoping they will get back to me soon.

Hey cthorpe, I'll pass this on to Ron, the programmer 2d boy, and see if he can help.

Re: Game won't start - Vista 32bitonek10/14/2008 - 19:18

I think the problem may lie under the DEP 'Data execution Prevention' maybe add it too the list, look on the internet to see for a fix. Im not totally sure if its a programming error if my idea doesn't work... you'll have to wait for kyles response.

Re: Game won't start - Vista 32bitron10/15/2008 - 00:00

in this case the conflict was with a firewall software called look'n'stop.  disabling the software didn't solve the conflict, but uninstalling it did.  the reason for the conflict is yet unknown, but at least there's a workaround now

Re: Game won't start - Vista 32bitcthorpe10/15/2008 - 00:01

Thanks for the suggestion about DEP.  I tried it and no joy.  I think I did narrow it down to the conflict, however.  It seems like Look n Stop is causing the problem.  Uninstalled it and Goo works.  Reinstall it, and Goo doesn't work.  I emailed both support teams to see if they can fix the issue.  I am optimistic, because the LnS team patched their program to support a specialized groupware program that my employer uses a few months ago, and eventually rolled that patch into a full release.

I did play a few levels of Goo with LnS uninstalled, and it was brilliant, so I am eagerly awaiting a fix to make it playable on my machine.

Now I'm off to retraining my firewall program... just when I had gotten it to the point that I didn't get any popups, an uninstall and reinstall messed it all up.

Edited: ron posted while I was writing.  It is a work around to uninstall lns, but clearly it isn;t the best solution.  Hopefully it will get sorted soon.    ;D

I am also having the same problem.  I do not have a software firewall of any kind running.

I am on Vista 32, bought the game through Steam, and am an administrator on this computer.

When the game loads, I am greeted with a black screen and a mouse cursor.  I am able to move the mouse around, but otherwise my computer is totally unresponsive.  Alt+tab, CTRL+ALT+DEL, ALT+F4 all do nothing.  I have to hard reboot in order to get back to the desktop.

killerbee, we just released a demo version of the game.  would you try installing that and see if you run into the same problem?  here's a link: http://files.filefront.com/WorldOfGooDemo+v10exe/;12063580;/fileinfo.html

Same issue with the demo.

Saw game on someone else's computer.  Really cool.  Imaging my disappointment when I, too, had the same issue.  Ran with admin privileges and also at different resolutions.  Disabled PC Doctor and tried.  All with no luck.

I think I had a solution for that Problem!
Right click on the Worldofgoo Game EXE, then
properties > Compatibility Mode > Windows XP
Click OK start the Game have fun!

Re: Game won't start - Vista 32bitrpflyer03/04/2009 - 14:22

This is something I tried with no effect.
When I first installed on Vista 32, I was able to play the game.
However, now when I click on the icon, World of Goo does not start.
A World of Goo process can seen to be running via task manager (though this never progresses to applications).
I have tried reinstalling but this did not work either.

Re: Game won't start - Vista 32bitTracker03/04/2009 - 15:42

Have you Windows Vista with SP1 and all Updates and Drivers?
Also install the World of Goo Update 1.30! The Game runs on my
Machine just fine! But with compatibility Mode ( Windows Xp Sp2 ) ;-)
