Side-by-side configuration error in VistaNepomuk10/24/2008 - 18:19

Hi!

I downloaded World of Goo from Greenhouse and I've been playing it with glee on my laptop with XP Pro, but when I tried to put it on my girlfriend's Vista laptop so she could play it too, she got a "side-by-side configuration is incorrect" error every time she tried to start it. What can I do?

Nepomuk, could you screenshot the error? Has anyone else seen this?

Screenshot: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3017/2972021123_4fef69997d_o.jpg

The application event log says:

"Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program
Files\WorldOfGoo\WorldOfGoo.exe".Error in manifest or policy file ""
on line . A component version

required by the application conflicts with another component version
already active. Conflicting components are:. Component 1: C:\Program

Files\WorldOfGoo\Microsoft.VC80.CRT.MANIFEST. Component 2:

C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.312_none_10b2ee7b9bffc2c7.manifest."

No ideas as to what I can do? I've been loving this game, and would really like my girlfriend to be able to play it.

If you google on that error-message you will find some answers.
Some say it might have to do with AVG (antivirus program) and other say it has to do with Visual C++. I think it is the latter which is causing your problem, so reinstalling Visual C++ might do the trick.

All I've understood is that there is a conflict between two manifest components.
I don't see what is exactly the problem neither what to do but...
Seem to have a link with that :

"For example, Visual Studio 2005 installs the CRT assembly as a shared side-by-side assembly which can be found in the directory %WINDIR%\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50608.0_x-ww_b7acac55 when running Windows XP or in the directory %WINDIR%\winsxs\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_none_db5f52fb98cb24ad when running Windows Vista.

The assembly manifest for a shared Visual C++ CRT assembly is also installed in %WINDIR%\WinSxS\Manifests\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50608.0_x-ww_b7acac55.manifest when running Windows XP or in %WINDIR%\winsxs\Manifests\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_none_db5f52fb98cb24ad.manifest when running Windows Vista "

(from MSDN : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235342(VS.80).aspx)

Maybe this could help Kyle to understand your problem.
PS : I've got Visual Studio 6 and 9 installed on my computer and have no problem to run WoG...
PS2 : maybe you could try to rename the second manifest file with another extension than .manifest ? (not the one in WoG's folder)
