Possible clue on failures to start for you.Hypocee11/17/2008 - 22:35

** This is not a request for help. My situation is resolved. I hope this might be useful to 2DBoy or another user. **

Executive Summary:
My experience indicates that one probable cause of World of Goo simply failing to start is trouble finding a sound device. In my case, my sound card was completely disabled, having lost its drivers with no other significant changes to my system.

Symptoms: In this failure mode, attempting to launch the WoG executable produces a flash of hourglass on the cursor, a momentary appearance of an empty window frame (may be too fast to see on some systems), and the creation of a crash.txt in the game's installation directory. No other result.

Narrative: When I originally installed World of Goo my system was half-infected with the neutered remnants of a major spyware infection. I'd been putting up with the remaining annoyances for some time, but yesterday I finally got into safe mode and cleaned the rest out. I then went to play WoG, but found it wouldn't run. I then tried the following steps: Reinstalling, reinstalling to a different directory, installing version 1.20, and installing 1.20 to the original directory. Each of those steps included uninstalling, erasing both the game directory and the profile directory, and rebooting the machine.

It was only after I gave up and went to do some other stuff that I noticed the final cleanup had knocked out the driver for my nForce onboard sound. The sound device was showing "problem" in the device manager and I had no volume control applet. As soon as I reinstalled the nForce driver, World of Goo was able to run without incident again.

The remainder of this message is a crash.txt produced by version 1.20 of World of Goo on the last crash before the sound driver was restored.
