..porting WoG to the ARM architecture. Specifically, I am thinking about the Pandora ( openpandora.org ) platform. Granted, this would not open up markets as large as Win/Mac/Linux & Wii, but it would be fun, nonetheless.
For anyone who does not know what the Pandora is: It's a hand-held computer with a huge potential as an all-purpose gadget. Web pad, ultra-mobile computer, media player, gaming console, war-driving kit, all rolled into one :)

I was amongst the first to pre-order, but I would pay another $20 if WoG ever made it onto the Pandora simply to support any & all effort in that direction.

There's a few other threads suggesting porting to the Pandora and adding touchscreen support. I agree it's a great idea and it would be good to see it. But it's something that there's little point rushing out as the hardware isn't in many people's hands yet, and won't be until more shipments have been made.

Would be more interesting to have it for the GP2X.

An Android version would probably make more sense in terms of userbase.

Or an iPhone version, but that wouldn't make much sense in terms of actually getting it developed.

I'm not sure if the GP2x would be up to it in terms of it's hardware specs.

I don't know. The new GP2X Wiz runs on a 533MHz ARM9 chip. That's pretty hefty for a small handheld device. And it also uses Linux, so porting should not pose too much trouble.

The pandora is the successor in spirit of the GP2x. It stems from the same community.

The iPhone forces you to use the feature-free subset of OS X they are using.

Android forces you to use Java.

The pandora & the GP2x allow you to use whatever you want.

Thus, porting to iPhone & Android are not feasible goals.

[quote author=hotblack link=topic=675.msg4979#msg4979 date=1225661685]I'm not sure if the GP2x would be up to it in terms of it's hardware specs.I've done a bit of GP2X development, and a simple port won't work. The GP2X does not have an FPU nor any kind of scaling GFX processor.

It might be up for a game like WoG, but it would need a rewrite. It's better to aim for the Pandora (which I don't have yet... shame on me)

Re: If you are bored after the native Linux port, you might want to think about..hotblack11/04/2008 - 16:39

From my knowledge of the devices that was my thought. The Pandora with a fast CPU, an FPU and OpenGL ES support is a much more likely (and feasible) target than the GP2X. Technically at least.

Yes, for GP2X it may be really difficult with keeping the actual code.
But a (authorized) clone of Tower of Goo, it would be nice :D

Legally it wouldn't even be a problem to make an program that can do WoG2X, where the user need to add it's own WoG files from a legal copy. It would be fun to try, but I wouldn't release anything without approval of Kyle or Ron. I don't own a GP2X-F200 (the one with touchscreen) and that also is a bit of a requirement.

I happen to think the right handheld platform is the http://www.nseries.com/index.html#l=products,n810" Nokia N810. Thanks to Box2D, there is already a pretty fun physics game for it, http://numptyphysics.garage.maemo.org Numpty Physics.

Thanks a lot for the linux Version!

I think it would be great to play WoG on the new GP2x-Wiz.

cheers Mischka

I think this game would be a killer iphone/ipod touch app. Though others have suggested that, what discourages me about that is that it's a fairly rigidly controlled platform over there.

I must admit, I wouldn't have cared about this game at all in the first place if there wasn't a Linux port. The fact that I can run it without having to leave my preferred operating environment goes a long way with me. Problem is, I'm not sure how much money there is in Linux games? I hope enough - cause I'm ready to abandon both Windows and MacOS entirely. Those business models can eat dirt, rocks or some other nasty material.
