Translations Needed! | phubans | 11/03/2008 - 21:19 |
Hi all, this is Paul. I had the honor of helping the guys at 2D Boy with their QA and localization. We're just about done with everything and ready for the European release, but a few items slipped past the translation process and ended up untranslated! Because it's only three items, it's not enough to meet the minimum amount needed to send to our translators, so we were hoping the great fans of World of Goo could help out! We're needing Spanish, French, German, and Italian translations for the following three items:
Quote: Some winners are bigger than other winners!|Look in each area's MENU for more important information.|-with distinction, the Sign Painter
Quote: A secret disposal hole down this way!|It's good for quietly disposing of unwanted visitors...|-the visiting Sign Painter
Quote: It's so simple.|-the original Sign Painter
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you, Paul |

check the french translation wikis for the french ones, we're pretty much finished I think :P |
Re: Translations Needed! | Nicosmos | 11/04/2008 - 03:39 |
Yes. I think we can still review a bit the second, but others are finished ;D It's here : http://hell.student.utwente.nl/wog/mediawiki/index.php/French_translation |

That's the semi-official translation as included with the 2D Boy version of the game; you are encouraged to update lines if you think you have a better translation. That's actually the goal of the wiki: to create decent translations by native speakers who are familiar enough with the game to keep the intended meaning intact. (The latter might be something that professional translators lack.)
If there are more people willing to contribute to the German translation, I'd suggest starting a German translation thread on this forum (just like the French-speaking people did). You can also add notes on the wiki.

Now that we have you, could I ask if there is any chance of the community translated text being included in the official version? Maybe not the boxed release if you are on a tight schedule, but maybe in the downloadable version.
I do believe that the community-provided translations have potential to be superior to the "official" translation and obviously they are entirely free; it would be nice if they were more easily available to players. (Right now, players have to manually download a recent text.xml.bin file here and edit their config.txt to use a new language). |

The easier you make it for people, the more work will be contributed ;) There are plenty of people working on all sorts of stuff, but I think much of the work goes towards reverse-engineering the game, just to find out how to actually contribute. I'm not saying you should release the source code or anything, but the more information people get, the easier it is for them to do cool things with WoG. Which should eventually translate directly into increased sales and a longer lifespan of the game. :) |
Re: Translations Needed! | Fede | 11/04/2008 - 13:29 |
Italian language: the current translation contains various mistakes, if you can tell me the *deadline* I can postpone other work and organize myself and do the work of both translating the new lines and fixing the old ones. |

First of all, great game! Here I have my suggestions for the three missing lines in German. Unfortunately I am unfamiliar with editing wikis, so i will post them here. Surely someone will know where to put them best.
Some winners are bigger than other winners!|Look in each area's MENU for more important information.|-with distinction, the Sign Painter Manche Gewinner sind größer als andere!| Schau in das Menü von jedem Bereich für mehr wichtige Informationen.| -mit Auszeichnung, der Schildermaler

Yes, I would like to replace our current translation with the community translation.
It might be too late for our next batch of US retail copies, but we can get them into all batches after that, including Europe, which is the important thing.
Do you have the names of everyone who has contributed? I'd like to credit anyone who helped in our readme, unless there's any objection?

If you have any else to add to the wiki, just go ahead and try, don't worry about messing things up. By design, you can't really mess anything up in a way that can't be fixed.

It's so simple.|-the original Sign Painter Es ist so einfach.| -der echte Schildermaler A few comments:
1. In the English version the "with distinction" refers to the Distinction in OCD; in the translation this connection is lost as there is no Auszeichnung in the German translation. (In fact, the German version translates "OCD criteria" with "obsessive completion criteria", dropping the "distinction" part entirely, which isn't very nice. I would have chosen a more literal translation.)
2. In the existing translation, the ending line is of the form dash, space, capital letter. So for consistency, you should probably end with "- Der echte Schildermaler" instead of "-der echte Schildermaler" (and similarly for the other cases).
(3. Isn't in dieser Richtung a bit unspecific? My German isn't great, but wouldn't something like hierunter be more appropriate?) |

I know only a few names, so I've asked people on the wiki to add their own name to the translation pages they've contributed to. (Most people that edit the wiki also frequent the forum, so they probably see this request one way or the other.) Last modified Tue, 11/04/2008 - 21:16 by Soultaker |

1. Perhaps in would be better to translate this as "| -Der komplette Schildermaler" which means "The complete Signpainter" This is quite unliteral, but it would better keep the connection to the OCD better.
2. You are right here, I overlooked that. As i noticed, it is already corrected.
3. I am not sure about that. If you want to say, that the hole is below the current position you could say "Dort unten ist ein geheimes Entsorgungsloch!" You're welcome to start a translation if you think there is some demand for it and there will be enough contributors to get in good shape; you don't need our approval. However, you should realize that the current version of World of Goo includes fonts with a very limited character set, so currently some foreign languages will not render correctly in-game. (This is a problem for the Czech and Polish translations too.) Fortunately, these fonts are editable, so I'm sure we can fix that later, but it's something to keep in mind.

Re: Translations Needed! | Fede | 11/05/2008 - 09:52 |
The missing parts of the italian translation have been added (but there's still plenty of work to do).
Soultaker, could you please tell me from which files did you take the text and translations? I'd like to do a fast swap to test the translation in-game, but can't find which files I need to change. |
Re: Translations Needed! | Boudin | 11/05/2008 - 10:52 |
It's the text.xml.bin file (or something like that) you can find in proprieties direcory (in World Of Goo directory). You need to decrypt it in order to modify it (see Encryption/Decryption topic) |

Nice!
As you've done most of it, could you please make a little change to your script so that one chosen language's strings overwrite the english ones directly? |
Re: Translations Needed! | Soultaker | 11/05/2008 - 11:30 |
Is that really necessary? You can just change your language code in properties/config.txt and preserve the ability to switch back to English (or other languages). |

Wow, thank you so much guys... I just included all of the translations we needed from the Wiki except for Spanish, since it wasn't there... I decided to used Germo's translations (thanks!) but he suggested a second opinion so it would be nice to get some verifications on his translations before proceeding :)
Well, I just discovered that there's three more text items that weren't caught because they were hiding in the PC version of World of Goo Corporation for the descriptive sign information. I'm not sure if these items are relevant to the European Wii version of the game, but I might as well include them for the sake of completion:
Quote: OUR VALUED FRIEND, you must|be connected to the INTERNET|to see other players in the sky
And that, my friends, is it! Any help with the last of these would be much appreciated... Thank you very much! :) |
Re: Translations Needed! | Fede | 11/06/2008 - 06:52 |
Italian:
Quote: OUR VALUED FRIEND, you must|be connected to the INTERNET|to see other players in the sky CARO AMICO, devi|essere connesso ad INTERNET|per vedere altri giocatori nel cielo
connetti
connessione in corso...
By the way, as the current translations aren't yet all polished, I'd suggest you to keep an eye on the wiki, for improved versions will come out shortly. I'd also like to know (if you can tell) who did the first translation, at least for the italian part, as the more I read it, the less I'm convinced of its quality. |
Re: Translations Needed! | phubans | 11/06/2008 - 06:59 |
Wow, that was quick... Thanks Fede :)
As for our original translations, we contracted a 3rd party translation group for their services... I only speak English, so I couldn't attest to their accuracy, but I was always curious as to the quality of their translations. |
Re: Translations Needed! | Fede | 11/06/2008 - 07:29 |
For the italian part it was mixed quality: some things have been translated ingeniously (i.e. "Goo balls", parts of the MOM dialogue), while other were barely ok or plain wrong (sequence of tenses, conjunctives in general, some particular phrases).
Anyway, I've also updated the italian translation on the wiki, but it's still not 100% corrected yet, and I need to test it. |
Re: Translations Needed! | Marius | 11/06/2008 - 07:46 |
I can attest* that when you translate the whole thing in a short period of time, you sometimes lose track of what's proper grammar/phrasing. However, when you pay for it, I think you can at the very least expect someone else beside the actual translator to check for things like that.
*I did the Dutch one |
Re: Translations Needed! | Daid | 11/06/2008 - 09:09 |
The problem with payed translators is that they lack the context. You know how the text fits in the game, the translator only has the text.
For the dutch texts, I would suggest that the translations are less literal. Currently many of them read a bit wrong because they try to capture the exact same meaning as the english text.
For example, I would: "nu 20% oneindiger in alle richtingen" -> "nu met 20% meer oneindigheid" |
Re: Translations Needed! | Marius | 11/06/2008 - 09:30 |
Aye, that happens now and then. Feel free to change it. Although I think the example you gave is a matter of opinion; your suggested change, I think, doesn't really show what is infinitely large. Maybe we should make a thread for this? |
Re: Translations Needed! | Fede | 11/06/2008 - 10:43 |
Another thing for Kyle and Ron: would it be a pain to allow us to translate also the "shortcut to World of Goo Corporation" and the labels at the end of the levels? |

Quote: would it be a pain to allow us to translate also the "shortcut to World of Goo Corporation" and the labels at the end of the levels? These texts are in images. We actually have to recreate manually these images. Whereas, the game seems to manage images in different languages. If you add your language code before the extension of the name of your translated image file, the game will load it instead of the original version. Example : "example.fr.png" is the translation in French of "example.png". :D
I created a subpage on the wiki for translation of images in French. You can do the same with your language. ;) |
Re: Translations Needed! | phubans | 11/06/2008 - 14:57 |
Thanks Germo! We have Spanish and Italian now... We just need French and German for those last three text items (which don't appear in the text.xml because they are images!) As we come closer to our European deadline, the urgency of the matter increases! Thanks so much for your help, guys! |
Re: Translations Needed! | phubans | 11/06/2008 - 15:05 |

But you just brought to my attention a new item:

Damn... I wasn't familiar with any of these until just recently, since I've mostly tested on the Wii version... Who knew there were so many hidden images of text associated with the connection.
So just to clarify, we need German translations for the following:
Quote: OUR VALUED FRIEND, you must|be connected to the INTERNET|to see other players in the sky

Re: Translations Needed! | Soultaker | 11/07/2008 - 21:38 |
"Welt der Goo" could be a good translation. Is Goo used in plural there? I think in English the Goo in "World of Goo" is a substance (like you would use water, fire, etc.)
... but, maybe translation isn't required at all. Earlier, kyle expressed the preference to keep terms like World of Goo, World of Goo Corporation, and MOM untranslated. Maybe it's best to leave the title as is.
Also, if people want to discuss translation issues like this (which is a good idea) I'd recommend starting a separate thread like the French guys did, as the discussion isn't all that interesting to those that don't speak German. |
Re: Translations Needed! | Oehr | 11/07/2008 - 21:44 |
yeah, i also thought about leaving it as it is. after all, a game title shouldnt be translated. its a name after all :)
but my question remains unanswered - what is actually meant with "World of Goo". Game Creators, Gods of the Game, Developers of all Goo, Mad Scientists, please respond :D |

[quote author=kyle link=topic=699.msg5388#msg5388 date=1226100444] Yeah, I would like to ship with as many languages as you guys can confidently provide. For quality concerns, I'd want several people's stamp of approval for each language so we aren't shipping with international profanity :)
There needs to be a full QC process of checking each text in-game too, for example
UNSER GESCHÄTZTER FREUND, Du musst mit dem Internet verbunden sein um andere Spieler am Himmel zu sehen.
is too long to fit the area it is assigned, this seems to appear in many translations of, but it's not something translators can know unless they see them in game (hence the need for some QA process on this too) |

Öhr and me we had a chat to complete and improve the german version ... after all we will try out while playing to make sure that there will be no more "too long" translations |

OK good, and I expect this will happen over time in the "community" translations anyway. My point is that if 2dboy are using these for the EU retail release, it needs to go through QA - whether that's the two-part effort of hiring both translators to verify and localised play-testers, or determining whether the community (us) have done this to a satisfactory degree. for signs by sign painter: Easily fixed. if its way too long, just move some words to the next side of the sign ;)
everything else: photoshop. ill check those out :)
though let us finish our first translation (check).
P.S. whats QA? typo? -> QC Last modified Fri, 11/07/2008 - 22:35 by Öhr |
Re: Translations Needed! | davidc | 11/07/2008 - 23:07 |
Qualitätssicherung und Qualitätskontrolle, ganz gleich.
They imply a "process" by which things are checked. So it's fine to play the game through as a casual user, but to be assured that all the translations are correct for release, you need to have a "script" of everything you must check - such as checking both the literal and figurative translations, and (in this case) whether it fits the space provided!
I'm not saying that this is necessarily something we are obligated to do, just that 2dboy might want to consider producing some kind of QA checklist for 3rd parties to verify before release (I'm speaking out of turn here, Ron & Kyle probably have more experience in the industry than I do. I think it's fine to enlist community help in such things but if they're then to be released to mass market they must go through standard QA). |
Re: Translations Needed! | Hideous | 11/08/2008 - 06:54 |
I finished the entire "other" table on the Swedish translation. And all the level names and descriptions for chapter 1.
Man, just the thought of possibly ending up in the credits of World of Goo keeps me going (that and translating stuff is just fun) :D
EDIT: Half of the signs in Information Superhighway translated All of those signs are now done! :D Last modified Sat, 11/08/2008 - 07:21 by Hideous |
Re: Translations Needed! | phubans | 11/08/2008 - 18:41 |
Thank you so much guys! :)
And no, World of Goo doesn't need a translation. And I'm pretty sure the title means just what it says, too, literally: a world [full] of Goo[balls]. |

by the way ... we create a new thread for the german translation ... and we are trying to be very conscientious (Öhr & me).
We would appreciate it to get any information about the pictures that needed to translate (is there a special font used?)
PS: is there a kind of deadline for all european translations??? Last modified Sat, 11/08/2008 - 21:54 by littleCoward |
Re: Translations Needed! | Hideous | 11/09/2008 - 05:16 |
Deadline would probably be like December or something, since the game ships out early 2009 as far as I know. |

I can write a progam to do this if someone can identify all the relevant images, and if someone with Photoshop skills can edit those images to remove the existing English text. I can then automatically generate localised versions from the wiki text. |

We already got a list of all that picture files on the german-wiki ;) take a look here: http://hell.student.utwente.nl/wog/mediawiki/index.php/German_translation#Translated_images or here: http://2dboy.com/forum/index.php?topic=746.0
But i think it would be easier for everyone just to translate the text and ceding the changing for the pictures to the producers. *imo* :-\
We'll see what kind of response is coming up about this. :) Last modified Sun, 11/09/2008 - 18:34 by littleCoward |
Re: Translations Needed! | Hideous | 11/10/2008 - 06:36 |
I can prolly 'shop out the text. |
Re: Translations Needed! | Oehr | 11/10/2008 - 08:07 |
i can do that too...
though instead of loosing picture quality, we would like to get some support by the developers: original editable images (multiple layer format, psd) used fonts
currently we are repairing the pictures(quality loss) and imitate the text/fonts(does not look perfect).
take a look:
its simply not perfect Last modified Mon, 11/10/2008 - 10:18 by Öhr |

Re: Translations Needed! | Marius | 11/10/2008 - 09:56 |
Indeed, it's pretty nice. It would also be nice, though, if we could get the actual SVG files... |
Re: Translations Needed! | Soultaker | 11/10/2008 - 11:56 |
I think there are Photoshop and Illustrator files at best (not SVG) but yeah, original source material would be useful.
I've send a message to Kyle asking for this*. It would be great if we could use the original artwork and just replace the text.
* mentioning this here to prevent half a dozen people emailing about the same thing |
Re: Translations Needed! | Nicosmos | 11/10/2008 - 12:28 |
Yes, good idea, SVG/PSD/AI files would be really useful ! :D |
