At this point the only way to save this site would be if 2-d boy released a sequel that was on par with the original game.

It's unlikely that they would release a sequel now. It looks like the 2D Boy website is abandoned now, there have only been three blog posts since 2012 and the last one was over a year ago. So I think 2D Boy is basically dead.

Honestly we could make a game if we had people willing to put the time and effort into it. The engine is already there, we just need to modify the graphics and levels and we would in theory have a new game

But there have been quite a few mods which replace the original chapters and levels, so that's also similar to what you're saying

Omigosh, I actually remember this project from way back when! I was so excited because I thought people were gonna make an actual sequel to the game, I vividly remember the post discussing the c&d they got from 2-D boy.
If we're starting from scratch though, I've already sketched out an idea for a new gooball, I might post it in a few minutes.

EDIT: It seems like you want to do a new project from scratch similar to the one in 2010, if you do I would LOVE to join, and we can get some other members to join too!

I think it's a excellent gooball idea! It would be great in water levels. Are you going to make it as a gooball file?

Also, I think you should probably make your own topic for a fan sequel. I guess you could argue it'd relate to the future of goofans, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't the original intention of the topic.
