Hey All, I'm running the .deb version 1.41, on Ubuntu 9.10, Gootool version 1.0.2

The original version of the game runs just fine. Its the gootool version that wont launch.
When I click on the WorldOfGoo icon within the modified floder, nothing happens.
Reinstalled gootool and WoG. Same result. Permissions seem to be fine too.

What could be happening here?

Id really appreciate your help.

First run GooTool and then from GooTool click "save and launch World of Goo" to run WoG. That should work, running wog.deb from modified folder is wrong way to start. Wink

Thanks for your reply Pavke.

I forgot to mention in my first post that I couldn't launch from gootool either.
I click on "save and launch" and nothing happens.

Here is my logfile.

This means your WoG is not running for some reason. Potentially it's your use of spaces in your folder name (remember, operating systems are particular about spaces. They don't work right unless quoted, which GooTool might not have done). Try using a folder name that doesn't include spaces.

BTW, are you an ex-Windows user? Microsoft doesn't educate users properly in naming conventions and such things.

Yes, this could be the problem. I, myself, have learned that if I use a string value to open a program, I can't use spaces unless it was user-defined. Tongue

Hey, Thanks for your responses GMMan and Enchanter49.

I removed the space in the filename. Renamed "goo goo" to "googoo. The problem persists.

You are right! I really need to take the linux "101" course. I've been using linux exclusively for the last 6 month's or so. Like anything new, the learning curve is a bit steep. For example; I just spent the last hour discovering the wonders of root access, gksudo, etc. As a consequence I gained permission to alter my logfile property's to "ALL" instead of "INFO".

Leading to a gigantic log. Here is the bit right before Launch.

I noticed one thing in this log. The refresh rate says "0".

On the gootool options tab it reads "60Hz". Strange.

Btw, My resolution in gootool is set to 800x600.

What do you all think?

I think:

a) Hooray! You found the problem!
b) 0 is a mixed boolean value. GooTool will use specific numbers for different settings. (here's a secret: so does GooMaker) Ex: For a video game, if max sound volume is selected, the value could be 7, and mute could be 8, or something related.
c) I'd like to welcome you to the site on behalf of all the goofans users!
d) I hope you enjoy GooTool!

Hey thanks Enchanter49, I'm both excited and confused by your reply.

It seems that we have found the problem. A good first step. Solving it though, still has me scratching my head.

I've tried to tweak the refresh rates/resolutions on my display and gootool. Haven't found the right combination. Am I missing something here?

And thanks for the warm welcome. From what i've seen so far, this is an awesome place.

I'm glad you're enjoying your time here. Laughing out loud

If this problem is serious enough (which I think it is), you can try emailing the creator of GooTool. His email is "davidc,at,goofans,dot,com". (he prefers his email not to be auto-linked)

I emailed him once to help me publish GooMaker. Not only did he do it, but he also gave me admin privileges for the whole package.

How well does your original World of Goo work? Being Linux, it could very well be a permission problem or such. Give us a log of the original WoG (at ~/.worldofgoo/), and then run the modded version and give us the log again.

Thanks for your help guys.

To answer your question GMMan, My original WoG runs perfectly. No bugs, framerate hiccups, or any other funny stuff.

There is a problem matching up the launch logs. The WoG log only shows post-launch items. While Gootool WoG log shows pre-launch items, because launch never occurs.

Nevertheless, Here they are.

Thoughts?

Hey Guys,

Here's an update. I downloaded the gootool.deb package. And did some digging in the /usr/share/gootool.jar/text.properties list, and may have found the problem within the display options area.

The display options:

options.display.title=Display
options.display.widescreen=Allow &widescreen resolutions
options.display.resolution=&Resolution
options.display.refreshrate=R&efresh Rate
options.display.uiInset=UI &Inset

Notice the refreshrate line?

Shouldn't it read: options.display.refreshrate=&Refresh Rate?

That typo most likely renders any options entered (eg.60Hz) invalid. Defaulting to "0" instead.
This could be the reason why my logfile shows a refresh rate of "0" instead of "60Hz" as entered.

Hmm... perhaps I should have asked this earlier....
"Back to Basics" for a moment...

The log file shows it failing to load several essential files...
And Error 17 is commonly "File not Found!"

On its first run GooTool will attempt to copy everything from your "original" folder into your "modified" folder... has it succeeded?

Take a look in the googoo folder... you should find a few files and a couple of
subfolders... in the res subfolder you should find lots more folders, and more subfolders and in those lots of bin and png files.

If any of it (all of it) looks missing... try copying everything from the original folder to the modifed folder yourself.

Then (without using GooTool if possible) try to run WoG from the modified folder.
By rights it should run perfectly fine! Since it will be unmodified

Then try it using GooTool to launch it.

Let us know what you find! or don't find Wink

Hey Daft as Brush.

Per your instructions, I replaced all the folders in "googoo" with their counterparts from WoG. Then launched using the WorldOfGoo launch file. It worked! Then, with much anticipation, loaded up gootool, hit 'save and launch' and something unexpected happened, the damn thing launched!

So, In recognition of your brilliance and insight, Mr. Daft as Brush, I hereby bequeath to you my first born child. What is your home address? He can be all yours in two days time.

Seriously, I really appreciate your help.

Now I can take advantage of all this site has to offer.

Also, as a side note, after successfully launching from gootool, I checked the log. It reads exactly the same as before. Refresh rate is set to "0". But it works now. So no biggie.

Well, some of THAT statement is a little awkward... Wink

I am glad to hear the problem is solved!

Glad I could help... although wishing I'd spoken up sooner, that way I could have really demonstrated my "Psychic Tech Talents"...

Oh.. and with regard to your kind offer....
Can he wash dishes? Clean windows? and sit quietly in a corner for hours on end..?
If so.. sure send him over...

Otherwise... I'll pass! Smile

Heh heh. I actually thought of that, but I don't know, too basic? Anyways, it's great to know that you've got your problem solved. Regarding the GooTool typo: It's not. In GUI design, the "&" stands for "underline the next letter, so when using the keyboard the option can be selected quickly". Another bit of information for your computer knowledge Smile
