Made it. My "The Sign Goo went to sleep after making the sign and then the level started" idea is good... but now that I'm into Minecraft, not sure when I'll get to test it. Also, you can't read the sign, the Sign Goo will have covered the sign with splotches of goo.
"Or is he?" would be my best guess.
