I never even dreamed of becoming a mod. Never. But how come all those different people became mods? What unites them?

First, you have to be helpful, second, you have to be here for a while, and third, davidc has to need new moderators (i.e. The ones here have to leave). Currently, we don't need new moderators.

I saw the thread title and was like "here we go again", but thanks for pointing out that you're not trying to become a moderator. People asked before and it got real frustrating.
But yeah what MOM said is pretty much it. Just being a respected and helpful member and knowing the forum well is all there is to it. And of course there must be a need for mods.
