This is my first thread. So, here is my idea. I need help. I'm thinking of writing a graphic novel and I need some help writing it. Even though it's not about WoG, I figured that there are a lot of ideas out there. If you guys want to here more, just comment!

So do you have any idea about what it'll be about yet?

I like the idea, I made a comic about wog, but I didn't finish it.

Well, it's about the dawn of the apocalypse. The world is going to be destroyed. And it's a secret war between a rebel assosiation and a company that is trying to destroy the world. They call themselves The Corpuration. Run by a guy they call The Director. This is a story about a boy who gets caught up in the fight. The Rebel Assosiation is a reborn secret society that has been fighting The Corpuration before they were all wiped out. The Corpuration is using giant robots to destroy each city in the world, one by one. So, when all hope is, seemingly, lost, the boy and the self-proclaimed general must use a time machine, connected to a car named DeSoto, to go back in time to try and get help from the original Rebel Assosiation. This is where they are taken to a Steampunk-style wasteland. But I don't know what to put in between the importent stuff. Or even names. Any ideas, anyone?

Well, I got a idea. I don't want to say the whole thing because you can make it up Wink.1•the year is 5 billion years into the future, and the sun's about to burn out, can a little boy named Ben invent a giant spaceship ark to save everyone, or will they all die in the friged doomed earth...2•(this is somepart of my wog comic, but I changed it) 3 plans, 2 boys, 1destiny=these boys were in a war against 6 robots. Can The boys destroy the robots, and maybe find the people?3•a space expedition went on a mission to mars, but went into a black hole, and into a new world, and it starts to decintagrate! Will Marc and his crew get off in time, or will they melt with the planet...

Hey gootrooper,

its best to just go with it without opinions first. That way, you can truly call it "your own", and you will be much happier about it and more comfortable, whether or not its good in the eyes of the public.

does anyone know how to make graphic art? my drawings sorta stink. I mean, it's good, but not the art I want for my story.

Here are a few options
•use paint or
•use scratch

@gootrooper: That is a GREAT story line. I would love to read that.
@gooey: scratch is a beginner simple programming program. Not art. Although Paint might work. Also: The sun will swallow the earth in a few billion years; and any life forms left would die before that because of heat. And a black hole will kill you. rip you apart like spaghetti. spaghetti on fire. So scientifical inconsistency there Tongue

But scratch is for Mac, I USE IT!

I am not saying you shouldn't use scratch, i encourage use of Scratch for you, but for making a graphic novel it isn't the best program.

Well, I use it to make gamestar mechanic backgrounds, don't ask me how

Do not, and I mean DO NOT ever ever use Paint for anything. It is a useless and terrible program. The latest versions (Vista's and 7's versions) are even terrible for pixel art. XP's version is ok for pixel art, but there are better programs out there.

Use PAINT.NET, GIMP, Photoshop, or something else professional. You'll be kicking yourself if you don't. You could even use Blender or something, and tweak the render settings to make your art look 2D (Toon shaders and specular shaders, for example).

Though if you aren't good at drawing on the computer, I'd recommend practicing a lot before you try anything too fancy or ambitious. A tablet PC would help a lot, but mostly it's just practice. It's a lot different than drawing by hand.

The only thing I ever use paint for is re-sizing pixel art, because Photoshop X2 sucks at it. It just ruins the whole picture. Paint just re-scales it though, which you need to do if you want to see pixel art Laughing out loud

anyone have an idea for a slow Windows's XP from 2003? And also, I need to use a different art style. Maybe like part cartoony, part manga?

Try scratch! It has... Oh, you can't take pictures on windows, sorry.

@thenoobtester: Not sure about Photoshop, but GIMP allows you to resize without interpolation, so the integrity of the pixel art is preserved. Just fyi.

@gootrooper: Try GIMP or PAINT.NET. Both are free, GIMP is just really complex and will take some getting used to. I'm not sure about PAINT.NET; I've personally never used it.

MOM: Photoshop doesn't, at least not with Image > Image Size... or Edit > Transform > Scale. Both use anti-aliasing. It's really frustrating, so if GIMP can do it without I'll download that. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the new version of MS Paint even more than the old one.

GooTrooper: Is Photoshop|Elements free? It's nice for drawing stuff.

Gooey Goo: Scratch is meant as a very (very very very) simple front end for a fairly simple front end for a powerful programming language. It's nice for learning how to program, but not for drawing stuff. The art editor is like a VERY old version of MS Paint, without an Undo feature, with lossy compression, and which can't even resize a circle without it becoming blurry or pixelated. The only thing it's really good for is if you need a simple radial gradient or block of color for a Scratch program.

Coincidentally, some people on another forum were recently talking about spriting with MS Paint. Most use Paint.NET, but one of them was using a downloaded version of XP's paint on 7 Tongue

Personally I'd use GIMP. I mean, I don't make my own sprites (yet), but since I love GIMP and use it for any image editing I'd naturally use it. Make sure to use the pencil tool though, it snaps to pixels, while the paintbrush doesn't.
But shouldn't PS have an option for disabling anti-aliasing? Surely, such a popular, professional tool should allow people to resize images while preserving pixely-ness.

EDIT: A quick Google gives two links (1, 2) saying the same thing: you can set the interpolation to "Nearest Neighbor" to avoid anti-aliasing.

I did not know that. Thanks!

well, a good way to start is to sketch some rough stuff on to paper, then scan that sketch, and start drawing off that, as shown here
