Nope. Because you're still using the same controls, pressing the same buttons on your keyboard over and over.
Well actually, if you play Fallout 3 and change the controls every time you start a new game... the only repetitive thing would be the clicking, and with some 3rd party tool you'd probably be able to swap around mouse buttons
The ONLY non-repetitive game is where there are unlimited unique outcomes.
Nope. Because you're still using the same controls, pressing the same buttons on your keyboard over and over. And you're still (supposedly) using the same computer.
C'mon. Everything is repetitive. It just depends on the degree of repetitivity (yay new word). COD has a high degree of repetitivity, while other, more open-ended games do not. Though my roommate plays COD constantly, so he probably thinks it's less repetitive than other games since he behaves differently in every match. And Fallout can be seen as repetitive, since it can be seen as yet-another-FPS.
Get the drift?
That being said, what on earth am I babbling on about and who cares? Sorry.
You always miss my point. Lol.
The point is, that there is no such thing as a non-repetitive game, because you can NOT have unlimited unique outcomes. Not even real life has unlimited unique outcomes (limited by technology of course)
AND YOU'RE STILL YOU! OMYGOODNESS! I'll have to play every game as somebody else...
But yah, I get your point. Even with a lot of unique outcomes, people will still get tired of a game. They may not even like it in the first place due to an open-ended structure. I, for one, like gettting the BEST ending, and if there are unlimited endings, that's impossible.
You mean games like this or this, where there are lots of different endings depending how you handled it? In the first one especially you can even get combinations of endings, depending on the state of different objects (for example, if you attribute the Phaenomena to Germaincus as well as smashing the painting of the vase). The game takes five minutes to play, but there are I-don't-know-how-many ways it can work out.
Another Planet finally has an official release! Download chapters 1 through 3 here! Thank you for waiting so long while I kept starting over.
*snatches a handful of fries and 2 nuggets from Red* Om nom nom...
Anyway *gulp*, yeah, all games are repetitive in one way or another. A 100% unrepetitive game (which is just as impossible as a zero-friction surface) would be the only game you need.
And even Doctor Lunatic: Supreme With Cheese doesn't truly fit that category.
I think I would like FPS's if they actually paid a good amount of attention to plot. But they don't; the plot modern FPS games use is almost identical to Doom and Wolfenstein. Oh, there's monsters invading everywhere; let's blow them to smithereens (Like Gears of War 3, Halo, and others; practically perfect Doom takeoffs). Oh, there's a ton of Nazis invading; let's blow them to smithereens (Like Call of Duty; Wolfenstein takeoffs). Not much new and creative. I watched the final cutscene of one modern FPS and the emotion put into it was about par to:
1st person: Wow, we escaped alive.
2nd person: You're my friend.
1st person: oh, yay
The end.
I think I would probably find them more interesting if there was some kind of actual plot involved. And I also dislike gameplay sacrificed for realism- i.e. limited ammo. While limited ammo is good if used right (like in one of my favorite games called Commander Keen), it really makes no sense to me to have limited ammo in a game where the only point of the game is to shoot everyone. At least give the players unlimited ammunition so they can blow other people to smithereens effectively.
I dunno; that's mostly what I dislike about FPS's. I also dislike shooting for shooting's sake; I'd rather have a complicated plot involved so I have something to think about while I'm blowing stuff to smithereens. And I also dislike having enemies be able to sneak up behind me; gives me the willies.
So if you like FPS's, play Doom. It's actually pretty fun and (gasp) not entirely linear like most FPS's on the market today. I haven't played Wolfenstein yet, but I may get around to it some day...
This being said, I have heard that Fallout is a good series, puggsoy. Just haven't gotten around to playing that either.
Keep in mind, the first two are way different than the third. Fallout 3's gameplay is basically like the Elder Scrolls series (well, it is made by Bethesda), where most of the time you're in FPS mode but you can scroll out into 3rd person if you want. Most menus and inventory systems and stuff is similar too.
The first two are way different, they're point-and-click in an isometric view. The battles are turn-based too, which is pretty interesting.
But they're all based in the same post-nuclear-war world, you use caps as currency and all that jazz, which is what really appeals to me in the series. I've only played Fallout 1 and 3, but I've heard that the second is almost exactly the same as the first (I think that there are a few improvements but the graphics are the same) and I'm pretty sure New Vegas is also just a slight improvement of the third.
Having said all that, you probably knew it all anyway XD
Oh, and I know what you mean about FPS's having no plot: Far Cry 2 is smack bang in the middle of that category. I've gotten up to 80% ad I want to finish it so that I have a reason to install Crysis (which I'm sure will be better), but it's just SO BORING. I'm waiting until I feel like shooting someone from the back of an assault truck.

Well, Fallout 3 is a bit intelligent. At least it's got a followable storyline, and VATS boosts up the strategy level.
And if Garry's Mod counts... wait, what am I saying?
Correction: The first Nazi-killing game. One of the first 3D games, too. There had been some before, but the technology was more limited before then (like only turning at 90 degree angles or such). I think they also used to have stories not integrated into the games themselves to cut down on file size. But I don't know a whole lot about Wolfenstein except what I read in this out-of-print '95 game development book I have. Basically, Wolfenstein was only an original game because the technology was original. Same thing with Doom.
I also agree with AP about Portal. Though Portal isn't exactly a FPS, since you aren't shooting anything except for wall panels.
But Portal Isn't a fps it's a first person game but not a shooter, it's an fp (first person) puzzler, yea it has shooting in it but it isn't counted as an fps because of the differences between fpss like cod and portal.

But you'd still be using a keyboard and mouse. That's repetitive. You have to invent a new way to control the game every time you play it.

all games are repetitive. That is why there is something called "replay value".

So if I build a game/mod in World of Goo...it can be completely unrepetitive?

Wolfenstein has no story whatsoever, from what I can gather. It's just another Nazi-killing game. I played the Wii port once.
